Last month of school!

June 5, 2026 Wow I can't believe it is already June! So many mixed emotions as we start to wrap up this amazing school year! Looking Back Language Arts Did our final prefix (dis-) and did an affix review Finished writing our stories Added an “All about me” page and a title page Started coding our stories on ScratchJr. Math Talked about measuring ‘referents’ and how to make a good estimation if you don’t have a ruler Made some indigenous connections and what they may use as referents in their day to day life Science Observed our plants with no soil, no sun and no water. We had some surprises and had a great conversation and learning opportunity about chlorophyll and photosynthesis Did some more coding lessons on ScratchJr Looking ahead On Tuesday we will have a stuffy day! Your child may bring a stuffy to school (it must fit in their backpack) and we will do some writing and math with our stuffies. Almost June!

  May 29, 2026 Looking Back Language Arts Learned about prefixes (-un, - pre, -re) Finished planning and are almost finished writing our stories Math Continued to talk about measurement Used a ruler to measure items (including our plants!) in cm Found some ‘nature’s rulers’ outside and measured chalk lines with things we found in nature Did some shape art by tracing shapes and using transformations to make interesting patterns Science Talked about the Scientific Method and set up an experiment to see what plants need Planted 3 seeds - one without soil, one without light and one without water Started to learn about a coding program called Scratch Jr. and practiced some lessons on the ipads Went out and found a ‘sit spot’ to use our senses and observe things in nature Looking ahead June 5                                                        ...

  May 22, 2026 Looking Back Language Arts Learned about the suffixes -ly (slowly), -ful (cheerful), -less (helpless) Started planning and writing our own stories Talked about a “hook” to get our readers interested right away Introduced our character using describing words Introduced the problem in our story Math Continued our work with 3D shapes and talked about/practiced sorting by attributes Introduced our next math unit about measurement and using non-standard units to measure things  Science Had a discussion about First Nations, Metis and Inuit cultural practices and how they value plants and animals Take only what you need Use all parts of the plants and animals Drew and labelled a moose to show our learning about what parts First Nations would use when they hunt Looking ahead Spelling words next week: sea, began, grow, took, river, four, carry, province, once, book

  May 15, 2026 Looking back Language arts Learned about the suffixes -er and -est (high, higher, highest) Talked about the doubling rule when using those suffixes (if a word has one vowel and one consonant you double the consonant (big, bigger, biggest) Finished our Jack and the Beanstalk story and broke down the story into ‘somebody; wanted; but; so; then; finally’ to summarize the story  Talked about accepting consequences and did some writing to explain our understanding Math Talked about attributes of 3D shapes Talked about transformations - slides, flips and turns and did some fun activities to practice these concepts Science Finished up our lifecycles projects Talked about plant and animal offspring and played a matching game Had some good discussions about positive and negative impacts humans can have on plants and animals Looking ahead  Spelling words this week: important, until, children, side, feet, car, meter, might, walk, white May 18       ...

Spring has (finally) Sprung!

  May 8, 2026 Looking back Language Arts Talked about silent letters (kn, wr, mb) Read some fairytales and talked about the setting, characters, problem and solution Wrote a top secret acrostic poem for Mother’s Day Math Finished up our addition and subtraction unit by writing a math test Started our geometry unit - we talked about 2D shapes and did some fun centres to explore them Science  We talked about animal lifecycles and started a slide show project - feel free to check it out on our Google Classroom. We will start presenting them next week. Our chicks have hatched!

  May 1, 2026 It was chick week this week as we had 8 adorable chicks hatch! We had such a great time with them and were sad to say goodbye on Friday! Looking back Language Arts Learned the sound /ow/ and /ou/ Wrote about the experience of coming into the classroom and discovering our chicks had hatched Math Finished our unit on addition and subtraction with word problems. A review sheet will be sent home Monday to practice for our test on Tuesday! Science Lots of chick exploration! Labelled the parts of a chick Finished our islands that showed landforms and bodies of water that we learned about. Hatching eggs!

  Apr 17, 2026 Spring is in the air as we watch our chick eggs in the incubator and the adorable eaglets from the eagle cam in Big Bear Valley. We are so excited to see if we get some baby chicks (pip watch starts April 27) Looking back Language Arts Practiced ea (sounds like short e - like ‘head’) and a (sounds like short o - like ‘water’) Planned and wrote a personal narrative about making our paper airplanes. We will try another one next week! Math Continued with addition and subtraction with regrouping We learned the base ten model and the standard algorithm (the way we learned as kids!)
